Surviving Your Peak Database Load
Please register at http://ssig201205.eventbrite.com/
Pizza and Networking Sponsored by RHI.
Ben DeBow from SQLHA is Presenting:
Surviving Your Peak Database Load
Each application and system is different, but all have a similar quality: there will be times where the systems are used more, and other times where they may appear to be sleeping. Good examples are monthly, quarterly, and yearly for financial systems and the holiday season for retail. The last thing you want to have in these timeframes is your CxO standing at your desk wondering why things are slow or possibly down. Ensuring that your SQL Servers are optimally configured for those heavy usage periods cannot be done with a wing and a prayer – you need an actionable, realistic plan. This session will discuss how to guarantee that your SQL Server instances and the configurations they use are as scalable and reliable as possible.

Last week, I was at SQLBits X in London, England for the launch of SQL Server 2012. In addition to some of the incredible new features in SQL Server 2012, there were also some other standouts, such as the latest version of BIDS Helper and discussions involving life cycle management best practices for database administration and development. The best practices reflect the trends that have been evolving in application development life cycle management such as version control, continuous integration, agile project management, geographically dispersed teams, etc. The format for this meeting will be to stimulate group discussion about the above-mentioned topics, as well as others. Feel free to bring your own topics to the discussion.

Most database professionals know (from firsthand experience) that there continues to be a "data explosion". Databases are getting larger, and working with Very Large DataBases (VLDB's) is becoming more commonplace. The focus of this session is to identify some key guidelines for the design, management, and ongoing optimization of VLDB's.
Special attention will be paid to the following areas:
* query design
* logical and physical data structures
* maintenance & backup strategies
